A SECURE FENCED YARD IS REQUIRED Lizzie, a lovely Blue Merle, has been in rescue for several months. She was raised in an outdoor kennel with little socialization and is very distrustful of humans. Her home will need to be quiet with an owner who understands shy and fearful dogs, who is patient and willing to work slowly to gain Lizzie's trust. Lizzie is housetrained, crate trained and loves to be petted. She gets along well with other dogs, and would do well in a home with a confident fur buddy. Like many fearful dogs, she eats her food overnight in her kennel, when no one is potentially watching her. When it is time to come inside from outdoors, the back door is propped open until she feels safe coming back in. She will not come when called, although she has started barking at her foster Mom when she hears her name. Although she seems to enjoy being petted, her foster Mom must corner her first. When she feels like it, Lizzie will ease slowly next to her foster Mom's chair and sniff her hand, then shuffle back to her "safe" spot in a corner of the living room. At 28 lbs., Lizzie is underweight and should probably weight about 32 lbs., so she is a bigger girl. She will be four years old in January. Her foster Mom sees lots of potential with Lizzie, but it will take a lot of patience to bring out this sweet girl's confidence and personality. Because she is a flight risk, Lizzie will be placed only within the Kansas City area in a securely fenced yard, with no young children in the household. Lizzie has started to go to the adoption events at Petco, to introduce her to new experiences and work on her self confidence. Please come by to meet her and our other adoptable dogs.
